Business Revs Up for Oklahoma Auto Glass Shops After Recent Storms

May 11, 2010

In addition to the dangerous tornados that ripped through parts of Oklahoma yesterday, a major hail storm has left many auto glass shops in the state busy tackling the damage.

"It's crazy," says a representative of City Glass OKC Inc. in Oklahoma City. "We have four phone lines and it's been ringing all morning non-stop. Most are windshield and backglass replacements. We had one vehicle in here, a van, that had all of its windows broken out."

Chris Grubb, owner of Stop a Crack Windshield, is seeing the same.

"We're swamped up to our necks in auto glass," he said. "We're really hammered right now."

Some of the hail that has fallen in recent days has been reported to be the size of a baseball. Due to the magnitude of the storm, Mel Roberson of Mr. Windshield Repair in Oklahoma City says he's seeing a surge in replacements-but not windshield repair.

"All I do is rock chip repair," says Roberson, "and hail does so much damage, it's way out of line … for repair, but I do know all the glass replacement companies around here are busy."

Daniel Diaz, co-owner of Duncan Glass in Oklahoma City, is a residential/commercial glass company that has had to turn several customers away, as the business doesn't do any auto glass work.

"Last night alone I received about 20 calls for automotive work," says Diaz. "

Many have forecasted more storms for this evening.
