Second-Time AGTO Competitor Polyuanskis Says Practice is Key
Andy Poluyanskis of Rockford Auto Glass in Rockford, Ill., will return to the Auto Glass Technician Olympics (AGTO) for the second time this year. In the months prior to the competition, Poluyanski says preparation is key, and his company has discovered a key method for practicing: the art of the video.
"We actually videotape ourselves to look for any mistakes we might make," he says. To prepare for last year's competition, Poluyanskis did this twicebut this year hopes to practice through four or five simulations.
In addition, he has the support of his general manager, Bandi Hantke, as he prepares for the event.
"We do a little live re-enactment here with Bandi," he says. "Preparation-wise, that's the best thing."
Poluyanskis, who has been in the auto glass business for 18 years, says he looks forward not only to the competition, but to the camaraderie that exists at the event.
"I had a blast last year," he says. "[There are] lots of good people to meet. After being around the business for 18 years, you meet new people every year."
Though the competition is fierce, and gets moreso every year, Poluyanskis does not hesitate to provide advice to first-timers.
"Prepare, prepare, prepare," he warns. "Advanced preparation is the key."
The AGTO will be held November 7-8, 2008, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.
The AGTO is held as part of Auto Glass Week in Las Vegas, in conjunction with the Auto Glass Expo at NACE, the International Auto Glass Safety (AGRSS) Conference, the IGA's Fall Marketing Conference, the National Windshield Repair Association's (NWRA) Annual Conference, and the Third Annual Walt Gorman Memorial Windshield Repair Olympics (WRO).
