Guardian Automotive Closes Wichita Distribution Center

Guardian Automotive’s auto glass distribution center in Wichita, Kan., has closed, according to local customer reports. A person who answered the phone at the distribution center said “no comment” when asked if the center had closed.

“The consolidation is a result of a systematic review of our businesses where challenging, regional economic conditions do not provide opportunities for sustainable, long-term growth,” says Earnest Thompson, director of marketing and brand management at Guardian Industries.

“We received a fax about two weeks before they locked up,” says Tom Rohr, owner of Goodland, Kan.-based Dependable Glass. “It sounds like employees had about the same amount of notice. … Employees said the location was very busy.”

Rohr said the closure hasn’t had a big impact on his business.

“It hasn’t been a big deal for me,” he explains. “I’m working with a couple of companies out of Denver and I’ve got a lot in stock. We are in a rural area and so when my customers want something, they want it now.”

The next closest Guardian distribution facility is in Denver, according to Rohr. However, he says the center will not deliver to his retail company.

“They don’t ship anything East of Denver,” Rohr says.
