A survey of Carstar Auto Body Repair shop owners discovered that the frequency and severity of deer-related accidents are growing as quickly as the deer population in some areas. And in one-quarter of deer-related accidents, the windshield needed replaced.
The survey found:
—More than 40 percent of store owners saw a 25-percent increase in deer-related accidents, while approximately 12 percent reported a 50-percent increase in accidents. Approximately 5 percent of owners say they have seen a 75-percent increase in deer-related accidents in their areas.
—The cost of hitting a deer is up, with almost 70 percent of owners estimating the average cost is between $2,500 and $4,999, while about 5 percent of repairs are between $5,000 and $10,000.
—The most commonly damaged areas include: repair or replacing the front bumper at 30 percent; replacing or repairing the hood at 22 percent; replacing or repairing the fender at 12 percent; and replacing a headlight at approximately 10 percent.
—In addition, approximately 24 percent of owners reported repairs also included a windshield replacement, roof and side panel work, as well as cleaning and repairing the interior after a deer landed in the vehicles.
