2013 Hyundai Veloster Owners Complain to NHTSA about Shattering Sunroofs

Several 2013 Hyundai Veloster owners have complained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that their sunroofs are shattering. While Hyundai issued a recall in late 2012 on certain model-year 2012 Velosters for the same issue, a recall on the 2013 model has not been announced. NHTSA has not opened an investigation and the vehicles are under warranty.

“The issue [an earlier recall on the 2012 model] has been taken care of. We captured the population affected. There are many things that can happen with sunroofs. They can be hit by an object, have defects with the glass and more,” says Jim Trainor, Hyundai’s product public relations senior group manager.

Most sunroofs from other OEMs have had issues and Hyundai is not alone, he adds.

“There was an intermittent malfunction with the assembly and loading robot and occasionally there was some contact with the robot loading arm and the sunroof glass,” says Trainor, discussing the 2012 model recall. “That contact, in some cases, caused damage to the glass which is what lead to the fracture of that glass in the field.”

Hankuk Sekrit manufactures the sunroof.

Owners of the 2013 model have been complaining to NHSTA of a similar issue with sunroofs shattering. In response, Trainor says it is “unfortunate to single Hyundai out.” The issue is common with many sunroofs, he points out.

“While driving on Highway 83 in Pharr, Texas, I heard a loud explosion suddenly and wind howling. I immediately set my hazards to alert the vehicles near me as I thought I was in a wreck. I looked up to discover that my panoramic sunroof had exploded and shards of glass were flying both behind my vehicle and inside my vehicle,” writes a 2013 Hyundai Veloster owner in a complaint posted February 28, 2014 on NHTSA’s site.

“I ended up with minor cuts and scrapes as a result. I called Hyundai, but they stated that this vehicle was not likely part of an earlier recall. … There is no possible way I couldn’t have heard a rock that size hit my vehicle directly on my sunroof strong enough to smash through the layers of my sunroof and pop the frame out of place. … The dealership is in process of replacing the sunroof but I’m concerned the underlying problem is being missed,” the owner adds.

“While driving on the 528 heading to work, there was an impressive explosion sound followed by glass shards and pulverized glass from the sunroof being propelled into the car forcefully,” another owner writes on November 14, 2013. “I was driving at approximately 70 mph and the sunroof was closed, all other windows were closed as well.”

On August 8, 2013, a consumer writes, “I own a 2013 Hyundai Veloster that I purchased in May. While driving over the Tappan Zee Bridge this morning, my sunroof spontaneously exploded without warning. I was in shock, covered in glass and unable to pull over until I reached the toll plaza.”

“My 2013 Hyundai Veloster’s sunroof exploded violently while parked under the carport,” writes another owner on November 12, 2012. “It caused damage to the interior and to the surrounding vehicles.”

Am potential buyer for Veloster but concerned at lack of urgency in Hyundai’s response to this, apparently, ongoing problem. Will now look elsewhere! Thanks for article.

  2. KELLIE POLZIN says:

The same thing that I am reading above just happened to me on 10/21/2013…I also have a Veloster 2013 model,,,,This is insane !!! and completely dangerous!!!!

  3. Elizabeth says:

HYUNDAI does not honor warranties, as my son’s engine blew after begin taken in to the shop, not even a year old car and it’s sitting at the Dealership but they are refusing to fix it. We are not the only ones with this problem. If GM.. must take responsibility then so should HYUNDAI. ..so upset as he is in the USCG and it appears another member of the service Marines to be exact is having the same problem with HYUNDAI. …check out Veloster. Org very upsetting as we just want what is right.

I have a 2012 Elantra. My sunroof exploded yesterday as I drove 70 miles on the interstate. VERY scary – glad my 16 year old son was not driving.

  5. Randy says:

I was driving my 2012 Veloster on the freeway at about 65 to 70 and heard what sounded like a shot gun going off and found that my sun roof had exploded and mostly gone out of the top of the car.

  6. Jen says:

I had my roof tested for the sunroof recall back in 2013 and was told mine passed their inspection/test. Clearly there’s something wrong with their test because my roof exploded while driving 70mph on the highway this weekend. The dealership is covering the repair of the roof and damage to the paint from the flying glass but I’m having a difficult time getting answers from Hyundai as to what they’re doing to address this issue. I can’t imagine if I’d had a child in the car or if other cars had been nearby and the flying glass had hit them.

  7. TAMI OLAUGHLIN says:

While driving to work in my 2013 Veloster it sounded like someone fired a gun in my car. I immediately got off the freeway and turns out the glass panel behind the sun roof basically imploded. has anyone heard of this section of the panoramic roof having issues?

  8. Cherish Carter says:

Just had this happen to me today driving down I5 in Sacramento, CA. Sunroof was partially open and suddenly all could hear was what sounded like a bunch of dry leaves crackling. (Spidering glass). Then it all fell right on me. I was covered in glass. Took it into Hyundai and it will be there for several days while they replace everything related to it. Including repainting the car, removing all the seats and replacing anything damaged by glass. Mine is a 2013 purchased just over a year ago. Filing a complaint with the NHTSA.

  9. Eilish says:

I drive 13-2 Hyundai veloster when I open the booth and it’s raining the rain water pours into the back seat it’s destroying my car does anyone else have this problem

  10. Erin says:

I have a 2013 – this happened to me this morning, just as I was about to exit the freeway, traveling about 65 miles/hour. All of my windows were closed as was the headliner, thank goodness. Otherwise I would have been covered with glass. I am still shaking from the volume explosion! Big chunks of glass went flying behind me as I exited the freeway, and the headliner is now heavy with broken glass. This is absolutely ridiculous.

  11. Shelia Logan says:

My sunroof just exploded tonight after I went through a carwash, which I had used several times before but while I was drying the car off!!! I had dried off the driver’s side, rear, and front of my car but when I was drying off the passenger side I heard a loud pop so I instantly looked up to see if something had fallen from the carport I was under but I didn’t see anything on the roof. What I did see was my sunroof shattering before my eyes! Oh I have a 2013 Veloster.

  12. Melissa Parks says:

I also just had my sunroof explode last night when I was driving 50 miles per hour. It sounded like a huge explosion. I bought this car from carmax and was never told about the recall. I have had multiple issues with the transmission, brakes, rotors, alignement and now the sunroof. Do not buy this car. 2012 Veloster.

  13. Cindy says:

On February 28, 2016 I just closed my 2013 Veloster’s sunroof before getting on the freeway (all other windows were closed), driving approximately 65 mph on 580 near Livermore, CA, when there was an explosion sound followed by glass from the sunroof crashing down my back. I was in shock trying to control the car get to safety. It looked as if the sunroof exploded from inside out!

  14. Dennis says:

I own a 2013 Veloster that I bought in 2014. I was driving into work had my sunroof open and my windows up like I do most morning. I heard what sounded like a shotgun went off in my car and I even ducked. I looked up and my sunroof somehow exploded. I’m glad I was only a couple miles from work. Not sure who would be responsible for this Hyundai or my insurance company..

  15. I own a 2014 Elantra gt. My rear spoiler on the hatch warped from the sun. And my headlight lens are shattered looking like spider webs. I live in Vegas and my dealer planted Hyundai said the company was aware of the problem and replaced everything .
Service mang. Brian took care of this no charge date sept 01-2016.

  16. Michael Dion says:

While visiting family in Idaho, I found my 2012 Veloster’s sunroof caved in as if struck by a bowling ball. This happened while it was parked, luckily, and between rainy spells; otherwise the upholstery would’ve been ruined, too. My auto dealer in Oregon is looking into my warranty coverage, but knowing what I do about the recall, it seems to *me* this should be fixed at no charge.

  17. Julia Hernandez says:

My son has a 2013 Veloster and he was driving home from work on the interstate when he heard a loud pop, his sunroof completely shattered. Called HYUNDAI and we were told there was nothing they could do about it, had to make an insurance claim for it. Why is this not a recall if this is happening to so many people. Get a clue Hyundai this could have been a very dangerous situation.

  18. Erickson Lopez says:

Hi, i was driving home and the sunroof cracked down on my head
