Dale Malcolm, long-time technical manager for Dow Automotive Systems Aftermarket, is leaving the company the first of the year to pursue entrepreneurial business opportunities within the automotive glass replacement industry.

“It’s time for a change,” he says. “We’re parting on very friendly terms. I’ve been fortunate to work for two really good companies over the years [Portland Glass and Dow].”

Malcolm began his career as glazier trainee at Portland Glass in 1979. Prior to joining Dow, Malcolm served as director of safety and technical services at Portland Glass. Portland was purchased by Harmon AutoGlass in 1997. Glass Doctor purchased Harmon AutoGlass in 2003. Malcolm has been with Dow for 18 years.

After taking some time off, his new pursuits will include training, product development, quality control and consulting on all levels in both the North American and international markets, among others, he says.

“This will be a new challenge,” says Malcolm. “The role auto glass plays in vehicle safety and the enhancement it adds continues to evolve. These changes place even more impetus on safe, properly performed auto glass replacement. I believe that my experience in retail operations, manufacturing and problem resolution has prepared me to take on this challenge. I look forward to helping businesses from manufacturers, retail shop owners, customer service representatives to the frontline technicians.”

Malcolm is a member of the Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard™ (AGRSS™) Committee for the Automotive Glass Safety Council™. He also co-chaired the AGSC Education Committee from 2009 to 2014.

Malcolm was one of the first 50 Certified Master Auto Glass Technicians in the country. He served as a member of the Auto Glass Certification Committee for ten years and was its chair from 1999 to 2006.

“Dale has served Dow Automotive Systems like no other,” says Terry Radcliff, global aftermarket commercial director for Dow Automotive Systems. “He has also served the industry well as an influential and zealous advocate for technician training and the implementation of best practices within the auto replacement glass industry.”

Steve Allison, technical service and development engineer, will take over Malcolm’s duties, according to Radcliff. Allison has 13 years of experience in commercial transportation and aftermarket.

Dale, congratulations on taking the plunge. You will now wake up every morning unemployed like the rest of us out here. You get to go from processing work to “creating” work. I’ve been doing it since I was 21 and believe me “freedom of time” has a tremendous value to both your family and yourself. You are a Winner and we all know it. Thanks for all your help and support over the years. Congratulations and Good Luck!!
