A combination of taking care of his employees and a strong focus on customers has made Auto Windscreens one of the leading automotive glass companies in the United Kingdom. Speaking at a presentation titled “Focus on Your Strategy” October 6 at Auto Glass Week™ in San Antonio, technical and innovation manager Tony Green said his company is at its strongest position ever and is continuing to grow.
His recipe? “We’re not afraid of new ideas,” he said.
Green discussed a philosophy of open-mindedness, including the Innovation and Training Academy in Chesterfield, U.K., Green’s in-house technician training program.
Green ensures his techs are both supported and rewarded. Support comes in the form of 24/7 reach-back support for all his technicians when on a job—or whenever they need assistance. And he takes strides to reward them with recognitions, such as his “technician of the month” program and in-house competitions. Winners of these competitions could earn their way to compete in events such as the Pilkington Clear Advantage Auto Glass Technician competition at Auto Glass Week.
He said the company stays in touch with customers’ needs and desires via surveys and other feedback. He uses “big data” at a macro level to analyze the business from a broad perspective. And he’s willing to embrace new ideas, such as his “rapid response scooter,” which is exactly that—a technician who is able to respond quickly to a customer via a scooter—or the integration of PDAs and tablets into his workforce. The company also developed a fit glass winch for installing panoramic roofs and a quick-deploy canopy system to keep the elements off the tech and the job, which comes in handy in England’s environment.
“We get a bit of rain,” Green said, noting the difference in the weather in Texas from his native climate.
Auto Glass Week is being held through today at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter in San Antonio. Stay tuned to glassBYTEs.com™ for more from the event.
