Corning Inc. is demonstrating what it calls “The Glass Age,” and that it is here today. The company will showcase how Corning® Gorilla® Glass could have new applications in automotive glass and other products, according to a company release.

At CES, Corning will unveil a glass-enabled concept car that “ … showcases how Corning is redefining the automotive experience through thin, tough, and optically advantaged Corning Gorilla Glass and other glass technologies – inside and out,” according to the company.

“We have an opportunity this year to share our evolving Glass Age vision, inspiring consumers, customers and partners to engage with us and help build the ecosystems for innovative solutions enabled by precision glass that can redefine everyday activities,” said Dr. Jeffrey Evenson, senior vice president and chief strategy officer. “Simply put, we believe glass components can be as vital to the next 50 years as silicon components have been to the last 50 years.”

Tellus Power will also demonstrate its innovations in automotive glass with its next-generation Asola Spheric OEM solar glass auto roofs.

The spherically curved solar glass panels are custom designed for auto manufacturers for direct integration into a car roof or used as solar glass sunroof, according to a Tellus release. Models include a panoramic sunroof, openable sunroof, or electric tilt and slide sunroof.

“Asola solar auto glass features auto-grade, dual-laminated tempered safety glass that is strong enough to stand on, yet flexible enough to conform to the car roof shape,” according to company information. The solar roofs are designed to charge electric vehicle’s batteries and provide power to the HVAC blower while the vehicle is parked, cutting interior heat build-up by 50 percent without draining the vehicle’s battery.

Tellus-Asola is also introducing auto manufacturer-branded solar glass car roof kits, according to the company. The custom solar glass car roof kits include a solar glass panel inserted into a slim carrier that is glued directly onto a car roof and avoiding drilling unnecessary holes. The products are built in Erfurt, Germany.
