National Underwriter Ranks Top Auto Insurance Groups by Net Premiums

National Underwriter Property & Casualty recently released its annual list of the top earners in the insurance industry. The list is based on data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, a research and analytics company headquartered in New York City.

The rankings are determined by net premiums written in 2016, and are broken down into several categories, including which companies are leading the way in private auto and commercial auto. Here are the overall top 10 insurance companies, according to National Underwriter:

State Farm Mutual Automobile Ins. remained number one, increasing by 5.1 percent from 2015. American International Group and Farmers both decreased from their reported 2015 net premiums, with American International dropping 13.4 percent and Farmers with a slight 1.1 percent decrease.

As for the private auto sector, the rankings differ slightly compared to the top five groups within the top ten 10 overall.
