Independent Agent Study Ranks Insurance Carriers

In its inaugural independent agent study, National Underwriter, in conjunction with the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA), polled U.S. property and casualty insurance agents to provide insight into the business, including their most highly-rated carrier partners.

So what do the agents, most of whom identified themselves as either an agency principal or owner, have to say about commercial carriers? Here are the top 10 insurers as ranked by agency managers:

Coming in last, out of 34, was Erie Insurance, which only had a 5.2-percent approval rating.

Overall, 35 percent of agents rated Travelers as the best commercial carrier. The Hartford, Liberty Mutual, Auto Owners, Chubb, Progressive, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, Nationwide, CNA and Cincinnati cleared the top 10 in that order.

By line of business, 55.8 percent of agents ranked Progressive best carrier for commercial auto. Travelers, Liberty Mutual, The Hartford and Auto Owners followed, respectively.
