January Miles Driven Increases Over 2017

Travel on all roads and streets increased slightly in January 2018, increasing .4 percent, or .9 billion vehicle miles, compared to January 2017, according to the latest figures from the Federal Highway Administration. Month-over-month miles driven decreased by 0.8 percent (-2.2 billion vehicle miles) compared with December 2017.

Travel for the month is estimated to be 245.5 billion vehicle miles. Cumulative travel for the year is up 0.4 percent, or 0.9 billion vehicle miles, to an estimated 245.5 billion vehicle miles of travel.

On a year-over-year basis, only the Western region showed growth, up 5.2 percent. The Northeast region showed the greatest drop of 1.8 percent.
