Leonard Smith spends a lot of time thinking—and in the process created a new way to sell auto glass. Smith, the owner of Jazz Auto Glass with locations in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, sells memberships that offer his customers discounts on auto glass and other services.
“I was thinking about the plans I personally have,” he said. “Like home warranties and appliances and how much they helped me. When things break, people sometimes don’t have the money to fix them and these plans help. Then I thought about auto glass.” Smith was also very aware of the customers he sees over and over again, because they have had the misfortune of needing multiple auto glass services in a short time.
The result was an innovative membership program that offers Jazz Auto Glass customers discounts on their auto glass repair and replacements, along with other services such as waxing.
“It’s like insurance, but it’s not,” said Smith, who offers three levels of membership ranging from $4.75 to $14.75 a month. The lowest plan, the bronze, offers windshield replacements for a flat $75 fee, rock chip and backlite replacements are free of charge and sidelites are $50. The top level, gold, “pretty much provides almost everything for free,” said Smith. Other services include towing, hand waxing, popping locks, door regulator installations and new tire reimbursements.
“When customers sign up, we charge them the fee automatically on their credit card every month,” said Smith, who adds that the program has garnered lots of interest even though it’s only been operational for a few months.
Another thing Smith has garnered is lots of publicity, with stories running in local newspapers, online and the local CBS affiliate.
“I believe in plans,” says Smith. “I am happy to be able to offer them.”
