The BMW M1 Returns as an Electrifying Plug-In Hybrid

What does the future of mobility look like for a car brand whose motto is “Sheer Driving Pleasure”? BMW tried to answer this question, amongst others, at the NextGen strategy conference in Munich this week, where they made it clear that self-propelled electric cars will have a permanent place in BMW’s model portfolio of the future — but this doesn’t mean that sports drivers will be neglected. The concept sports car BMW Vision M Next impressively demonstrates what driving pleasure could look like in the world of tomorrow.
The doors unlock by face recognition, and the interface between driver and car, called the “Boost Pod”, has three screens and an augmented reality system that projects information onto the windshield.

TODAY’S BLOG: Spanking the Glass

I can always tell when a technician was trained by an “old-timer” like me. How? They “spank” or slap the glass into position rather than smooth it in place to make the seal. It comes from the old days when glass had to be spanked and seated into a gasket or when dense butyl tape needed to be forced down to contact uneven pinchwelds. Liquid urethanes call for smoothing the seal, not spanking or slapping the glass into place.

Kia HabaNiro Concept Explores the Future of Mobility, Connectivity

Not content to allow its Genesis cousins to steal all the thunder in the runabout concept game at this year’s New York International Auto Show, Kia brought the noise with something called the “HabaNiro Concept”. It’s an all-EV urban cruiser with over 300 miles of range – at least that’s what Kia’s claiming. They’re also claiming that it’s an “all-electric everything car,” or “ECEV.” In an effort to make it tougher to define, they’ve given it upwards-opening butterfly doors, 20-inch wheels wrapped in chunky rubber, and a stocky profile.
That’s the outside; inside, the steering wheel looks more like an airplane yolk, but that’s not the best part; we’ve seen heads-up displays, but while the latest from BMW appears as big as my laptop screen, the HabaNiro takes this to the next level by making the HUD take up the entirety of the windshield.

Test Drive: 2018 Toyota Camry LE

This week, we’re driving the eighth-generation Toyota Camry, still America’s best-selling midsize sedan. This 2018 Camry is indeed all-new with a wider, lower and longer stance available in five gasoline models and three hybrids.
Although previous Camry generational upgrades were mild at best, this eighth-generation unit breaks that mold and is very appealing to the eye. The new motif starts with a larger dark gray grille attached to a smooth hood arrangement leading to a more assertive windshield slope.

Repairs Not to Ignore Unless You Want a Ticket

It’s no fun to take time out of your day to deal with vehicle repairs, especially repairs that don’t necessarily impact your ability to drive. That crack in your windshield doesn’t seem to be getting worse, right? And your exhaust system might be noisy, but cars are loud, right? Turns out, the repairs you’re willing to ignore shouldn’t be dismissed, unless you’re willing to deal with a possible ticket or fine.

Moscow Car Crash Turns into US$80 Million AR Concept

For Vitaly Ponomarev, a fender-bender in his Audi A6 has turned into an US$80mil (RM331.36mil) opportunity. The 30-year-old – who claims to have careful driving habits – collided with the car in front of him while looking down at his gadget for directions on one of Moscow’s ring roads in 2012. The mishap spurred an idea: if he could find a way to project directions onto the windshield, drivers wouldn’t take their eyes off the road to find their way.

Hey, Ford Built a Self-Driving Truck Too!

With the F-Vision, Ford too jumps onto the autonomous-truck bandwagon, and why shouldn’t they? Autonomous trucks, if done right, benefit everyone. They’re safer, they can work day and night (bringing down the cost of logistics), they work on holidays too, and autonomous trucks don’t unionize (yet).
The F-Vision, unveiled at the Hanover Motor Show, however, won’t be completely autonomous. The silver, curvaceous vehicle comes with Level 4 autonomy, which means there’s a human overseeing the truck’s decisions, either within the truck, or remotely. This explains why the F-Vision comes with a cockpit, a windshield, and a very discernible human-sized door. I’m not a fan of the halftone detail on the windshield, personally… but it’s the prospect of self-driving logistics that excites me more than anything else.

Dan Davies: B.C. Government’s Latest Blindside Hits Auto Glass Businesses

If you own or work for a small business in British Columbia, you are probably well aware that the current government is looking for every means possible to squeeze more money out of the little guy.
