Freak Hail Storm Strikes Arizona, Creating Boom for Auto Glass Business
October 7, 2010
Many Arizona auto glass shops are scrambling this week in the wake of a freak hail storm that pounded the northern part of the state with tennis ball-sized hail and brought with it several tornadoes.
“Oh, it’s been huge,” says Bill Moss, owner of USA Replacement Auto Glass in Phoenix. “We are booked up for three solid days and probably into next week, too.”
Moss didn’t remember the last time he’d seen a hail storm in the state.
“It was a windfall for us,” he says. “It’s been slow, and now it’s busy like the old days.”
A representative of American Glass Co. in Phoenix who declined to be identified said the company is seeing all types of damage.
“There’s all kinds of damage—windshields, backglasses, door glasses, side mirrors. Everything’s broken,” she said, adding that the storm was “definitely unusual.”
A CSR for Ever-Ready Glass in Phoenix said the company, which does auto, residential and commercial work, also has seen a major surge.
“Yesterday was insane,” said the representative, who only would provide his first name, Jeff. “Business quadrupled.”
