Safelite is holding its biannual Best of Belron US competition today in New Orleans. The event kicked off this morning with an opening by Tom Feeney, president and CEO, who prompted 12 technicians from across the United States to “get ready to rumble.”
The competition is similar to several of those held throughout the world in which technicians compete against each other on a variety of specific criteria involved in their day-to-day jobs. In the Safelite competition, the replacement portion of the competition requires technicians to score well on customer interaction, inspection of their work area, identifying special needs, obtaining signatures on pre-inspection forms and work orders, preparing glass, protecting the vehicle, removing damaged glass, preparing and treating bonding surfaces, installing new glass, reinstalling trim and parts, cleaning glass, vacuuming interior, reactivating lights and thanking the customer. The vehicle being used in today’s competition is a Ford Focus.
glassBYTEs.com™/AGRR™ magazine was able to speak with Safelite chief operating officer and senior vice president during the event about how competitors reach this level.
"To get to the national competition, our 12 technician finalists have already won two earlier events—a market competition and a division competition,” says Harrison. “They've also maintained high levels of service throughout the year, which is a requirement for all of our competitors. They've already proven themselves the best both in technical skill and in customer interaction."
The same contestants also removed and re-installed the sidelites and windshield of the vehicle. In addition to the replacement competition, there is also a repair portion, during which technicians are judged on customer interaction, inspection, vehicle protection, safe windshield temperature range, use of the company’s primer and resin, removal of resin, buffing of pit, completion of job and thanking the customers.
The winner of the competition wins $10,000 and the chance to compete in Safelite parent company Belron's international competition, the Best of Belron, scheduled for May 23-24 in Barcelona.
Also being held today is a customer service representative (CSR) competition, during which CSRs compete on field organization, referral contact and sales contact. Nine CSRs are competing in that competition.
The event wraps up this evening with the announcement of winners. Stay tuned to glassBYTEs.com™ for more information from the competition.
