December Sees Major Decline in Miles Driven

The Federal Highway Administration (FHA), a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation, has released the newest numbers for miles driven in December 2012, showing an overall decline of 2.9 percent, or -7.0 billion vehicle miles, from December 2011.

Overall travel for the month is estimated to be around 236.3 billion vehicle miles, according to the report. Cumulative travel for 2012 has, however, increased by 9.1 billion vehicle miles, or 0.3 percent. So far, the cumulative estimate for the year for is 2,938.5 billion vehicle miles.

Regionally, travel experienced even steeper declines. With the exception of the South-Gulf region, which only saw a minor decline of 0.7 percent, all other regions noted decreases near 3 percent. The North-East saw the most notable decline, down 4.6 percent from December 2011. These numbers are in stark contrast to November’s numbers, which showed an overall trend of increases.
