The Federal Highway Administration (FHA), a division of the U.S.
Department of Transportation, has released the newest numbers for
miles driven in March 2013, showing an overall decline of 1.5 percent,
or -3.7 billion vehicle miles, from March 2012.
Overall travel for the month is estimated to be around 248.8 billion
vehicle miles, according to the report. Cumulative travel for 2013
has also decreased at a rate of 0.8 percent, or -5.6 billion vehicle
miles. So far, the cumulative estimate for the year for is 690.3
billion vehicle miles.
Regionally, travel experienced even steeper declines. With the
exception of the West region, which saw a modest increase of 1.6
percent, all other regions noted decreases. The North Central and
Northeast regions saw the most notable declines, down 3.6 percent
and 3.4 percent, respectively, from March 2012. These numbers appear
to continue the trend from February's
numbers which showed an overall decline in miles driven.
