Mississippi Legislature Considers Bill to Reduce Flying Debris from Trucks

The Mississippi State Senate has passed a bill that would amend state law that would require certain vehicles to cover their loads when carrying certain loose material in an effort to reduce damage caused by such road debris, including windshield breaks.

If passed, the amended law also would require that vehicles manufacturerd on or after July 1, 2009, to be equipped with and use a tapr, canvas or other such top to cover their loads when carrying certain loose material over state highways; vehicles not equipped with a tarp or canvas would be required to use sideboards to secure their loads.

The bill is now under consideration in the state's house, where it has been referred to the transportation committee. The measure was introduced by Miss. Sen. Tom King.
