NHTSA Looks at "Non-Traffic Accidents," Including Backovers and Vehicle Window Injuries
A recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of non-traffic incidents and injuries estimates that approximately 2,000 injuries resulted from the closing of a vehicle window in 2007. Likewise, the study shows that vehicle window asphyxia accounts for an annual average of five fatalities per year, and that this occurs both with the closing of power windows and with partially open (stationary) windows.
Likewise, the study revealed that vehicle backovers accounted for 19 percent of non-traffic crash fatalities and 14 percent of non-traffic crashes during the year 2007. NHTSA estimates that there were 221 deaths resulting from backovers, and 14,000 injuries during the year.
